Dear Colleagues:
The Council of the College of Chiropractors of Alberta is changing how regulated members join Council, moving from an election to a competency-based appointment process which launches today.
Two Council vacancies available
Each year, terms of two regulated members serving on Council end on June 30. Council will be using the appointment process to fill the vacancies. New Council Members will begin their terms on July 1.
Competency-based selection
The appointment process will include competency-based selection, which was adopted by Council in 2021. Approximately one-third of health profession regulatory Colleges in Alberta have initiated or have already implemented a competency-based appointment process for the selection of their Council.
Call for applicants - March 13-April 14, 2023
Shortly, every regulated member will receive an invitation to the online application from communications@theccoa.ca via Survey Monkey (member@surveymonkeyuser.com). If you don't receive it, please check your spam folder. The online application will be open from March 13 to noon April 14, 2023.
Council appointments
The Health Statutes Amendment Act (also referred to as Bill 46) introduced significant changes to health profession regulation in Alberta. The Act addressed a concern that regulators were not acting in the public interest when they were combined with the association function. The College of Chiropractors of Alberta separated from the association function December 2021 and administered a series of changes to adhere to the legislation. One of those changes is moving from an election process (which is an association function) to an appointment process.
The move helps to reduce the perception that regulated members serving on Council represent their peers and the interests of the profession and not public interest. The appointment process is supported by Bylaws 2.4 Terms of Office, 2.8 Eligibility for Council Appointment and 2.9 Appointment Procedure.
